Chris' path to design is a fascinating one, deeply intertwined with his love for music. Growing up in Mechanicsville, Virginia, he spent his early years experimenting with Microsoft Photodraw, creating unique wallpapers inspired by his favorite franchises. His high school years introduced him to the world of graphic design and open-ended assignments, thanks to his teacher Erik Leise.
"Erik's class was a gateway to a whole new world of music for me," Chris reminisces. "It's where I discovered artists like Death Cab for Cutie and Fiona Apple."
This early exposure to music and design laid the foundation for Chris' future in New York, where he studied communication design at Parsons. Here, he fell in love with code and its intersection with animation and motion graphics.
The Challenge of Time and Innovation
As the sole designer at Pitchfork, Chris faces the challenge of creating engaging visuals for the Selects playlist within a tight time frame. With just one or two hours to work on each piece, he often doesn't have the luxury of listening to the featured music. Instead, he draws inspiration from his daily life and follows his creative whims.
"Time is a constant challenge," Chris admits. "I wanted to add motion to the Selects visuals, but developing new ideas in code each week was too time-consuming."
This led him to explore Cavalry, a software with pre-set modules called 'Behaviours' that offer procedural animation benefits. Chris saw an opportunity to experiment and learn, using the Selects project as a creative playground.
A Unique Style Emerges
As Chris mastered Cavalry, a distinct style emerged in his Selects designs. Each piece, while varying in origin stories, is united by an abstract, glitchy aesthetic. Some concepts are driven by celebrations, like the pixelated horses for the Year of the Fire Horse, while others are born from analogue beginnings, with Chris drawing type or photographing his hands.
"The beauty of Cavalry is that it allows me to create unique, dynamic assets for both motion and static platforms," Chris says. "It's a challenge to make something new each week, but it's also a fun opportunity to experiment."
